These are good to help keep your pet's weight up.  I avoid whole grains & stick with white pasta, white rice, refined grains or starchy vegetables such as potatos.  These items are mostly KD friendly and easy to prepare.  When buying something for the first time, I check the ingredient list between brands.  I often find that the lesser expensive, "store brands" have fewer additives than the brand name counterpart and of course, are less expensive.

A reminder that I use distilled water when cooking Roxie's pasta & rice.  I normally use CalRose sticky rice, but long grain white on occasion.  Also, I know some people don't rinse their rice before cooking.  I always rinse our rice well before cooking and I think that's helpful for the KD issue, too.  If you don't have a dedicated rice cooker, I highly recommend them.  They are very easy to use & cook the rice perfectly, every time.

Pasta, rice, cereals, & starchy carbohydrates

These baby cereals do not require cooking.  I use either no salt stock or distilled water.
Puffed wheat and puffed rice (or "puff" as we call it!) has been a staple of Roxie's diet for a few years now.  I usually mix it with some baby food or unsalted broth to give it some flavor.  The cheap brands have few additives.  (I don't buy the sugared name brand versions.)  However, my main, local market has stopped carrying them.  I have been able to find cheap, puffed wheat but still need to find a place to get cheap, puffed rice.  Again, I avoid the whole grain versions that are readily availble in the health food sections or stores.
